Student Exchange Programs

Student exchange programs are academic programs for students that give the opportunity to study in a foreign country. The programs offered through schools, and educational foundations. Students who participate in exchange programs do so during their junior year of college and also available for high school students, graduate students, and adult students. They gain command of a foreign language and learn for other cultures.

Student exchange programs will teach students for their independent living. They will stay in the homes of host families while in the foreign country. They can learn the day-to-day activities of a host family while pursuing their studies.

American colleges and universities accept academic credit for student in these programs. Students will find programs through American colleges or universities located in foreign counties. These institutions are structured like schools and generally offer classes in English. Some foreign universities offer special courses for international students focused to the language, history, culture, and many others. Credit for these courses will be difficult to transfer to a student’s home college or university.

One of the most notable organizations in the United States that offer programs for American students to study abroad is the Institute of International Education (IIE). This organization conducts the Fulbright program for students at the pre- and post-doctoral level and the Council on International Educational Exchange that offers programs for high school students and adults.
